Introduction

We all have a role in this world, and this paper demonstrates how we can all help eliminate a few of the issues the World faces today. With all the hardships we face daily here in the United States, but globally, we need to stop and ask ourselves, “What does the world need now?”  We need to address many things in the World in its current state; the list seems endless.  This paper has highlighted six situations that we have decided are most vital to us.  The topics include improved recycling, enough food for everyone, improving diversity, safe and healthy immigration, a Covid 19 free world, and finally, the use of conversation over conflict.

Improved Recycling

The lack of recycling in the world today is a big problem. An estimated 6.3 billion tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year, and that number keeps on growing. Improving our recycling techniques, accessibility, and awareness will help drastically reduce these numbers and hopefully create a significant change in the harm it is causing our environment. One way to increase recycling is simply by making it more accessible to everyone. Increasing accessibility gives people more chances to take it back, as many say they simply do not have the time to return it. Another way to increase recycling is by creating better techniques. A company based in the UK recently made a recycling machine that takes plastics and breaks them down to create essentially brand new plastics. Therefore they do not end up in landfills or the environment. Recently, there has been a massive push towards increasing awareness of recycling. Numerous companies, projects, and even some YouTubers have taken charge and created an initiative to reduce the waste in our environment. Implementing all of these things would be inevitable so that we could make a real difference.

Enough Food For Everyone

Another problem the world is faced with, but not always given much thought, is food available for all.  In 2020, roughly 720 to 811 million people worldwide will go without food.  Their lack of food varied, from poverty, underdeveloped countries, Covid 19, and ongoing war.  The United States has implemented international and foreign food programs that help to provide food security to developing and impoverished countries.  Some of these programs are the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) (Bread for The World).  On a national level, the United States has several organizations that focus on raising awareness and helping to provide food to those in need.  These groups are Action for Hunger, Feeding America, The Hunger Project, and Meals on Wheels, just to name a few.  Feeding America is one of the largest organizations that help fight hunger in the United States.  According to their website, they help spread awareness by researching, having advocates throughout the country that help fight for food assistance programs, having public service announcements, and partnering with celebrities and leading corporations (Feeding America).  Having access to food is a fundamental human right, and efforts are needed globally to ensure that every person has the proper food intake.  We can help ensure this fundamental human right in several ways.  Easier access to food can be accomplished by utilizing a community garden, growing food, and donating to local food banks.  Supporting food banks is essential to decreasing food insecurity in communities.  Food banks play a crucial role in distributing and networking food across America (Healthy Food Handbook).  We can all play a part, locally and globally, to help reduce the number of individuals that face food insecurity.

Improving Diversity and Equity

Diversity in the workplace is another pressing issue that affects those who are minorities. Organizations like Gap Inc, Marriott International Inc, and HP Inc have adapted to more diverse and inclusive workplaces. These diversity and inclusion practices have added value to the organizations by promoting employee engagement, healthier workplace culture, and a better sense of inclusion among employees and supporting the decline in racial and bias conflict.  Diversity is the existence of multiple differences and complex social identities, and it has everything to do with race, gender, ethnic groups, age, personality, and education, to name a few. Diversity in the workplace is a matter that has gained increased attention over the years. In previous years women and minorities have faced difficulties such as fair compensation and not landing jobs, which has set them back by not allowing them the same opportunities as the average white male. Women and minorities were the first to alter this setback dramatically. Organizations that adapted to a more diverse workplace discovered, “Executive boards perform significantly better financially than companies without. They also enjoy higher employee satisfaction rates, attract more quality talent, and make better decisions overall” (Beasley). Companies adapting to this change have made a positive impact that could influence the following organization in making the change. According to the 2021 Hopes and Fear survey, “Technology alone is not enough to transform business and boost results. Success takes people with the right skills, backed by the right technology” (PricewaterhouseCoopers). A diverse workforce and deliberate inclusion efforts help drive equitable outcomes that can lead to the broader economic development of our society, which benefits everyone.

More Safe and Healthy Immigration

The United States is a dream made up of diverse individuals. Immigrants have come from all over in hopes of establishing a safer life and access to the American dream. Many of them were not born here and went to great lengths to feel our freedom.

Immigrants and their children will make up about 83% of the growth in the aging workplace by 2050, with the immigrant population from Latin America being the highest contribution.  Due to many regulations or lack thereof, these immigrants face a great danger every time they leave their families for the workforce. Immigrants tend to take more risky jobs as they are the only ones they often provide.  On top of all the dangers surrounding their jobs, immigrant workers are also not afforded the same access to healthcare in case of a workplace injury.

If this was not enough, their process to enter our country and become legal citizens is far from ideal. The process is long, and the test is ruling. 2 out of 3 Americans could not pass the test.  However, we expect immigrants to know all the information. The process for immigration status can take anywhere from 18 to 24 months.

We as Americans know how great a place it is to live in this country.  We need to take steps to protect all who live here and give them the same opportunity and safety that we who are born here have.  There are better ways to handle immigration in this day and age. Nothing is impossible, and this stays true for all, or at least it should.

Covid 19 Free World

The following relevant topic that has been talked about so much these past few years is Covid-19. Covid has drastically changed people to the point where they are now dealing with mental health issues because their lives have been so different. Many adults over the pandemic were recently diagnosed with anxiety or some type of depressive disorder; many adults dealt with it hard. Some even took it to the point where they used alcohol or drugs to try and feel normal. However, all the people in the world have been deficient; everything these last few years just has been entirely different from what everyone is used to; from when everything shut down, many restrictions on things, a lot of kids and adults now that thought certain things were fun just come completely dull now. There has also been a lot of that talked about in articles; the percentages for suicides, anxiety, depression, and even substance abuse have just skyrocketed since the pandemic hit. Mental illness was terrible over the pandemic for everyone; it ruled the world, covid has done so much to the communities around the world, jobs are closing, the economy is going so far downhill, to the point right now where it is hard to even get back to normal, especially now with the tensions between Russia and Ukraine. It is unknown when or if the economy will be able to get back into a good position anytime soon with all that has been happening, making it seem as if this situation will never fully improve.

Conversation Over Conflict

Along with the struggles we have been currently facing in today’s times, a growing issue has been the lack of communication among one another. We have begun to accept a culture with weakened communication skills, leading to more significant misunderstandings, miscommunications, tension, and eventually conflict. Unfortunately, the conflict appears to have become more widely accepted than hard work and resolution, clearly demonstrated in recent events today.

People automatically jump to conflict in the face of different views and opinions, and to justify their feelings, they blame others. Some people would rather avoid conversations altogether than engage in difficult ones, but avoiding difficult conversations can lead to adverse outcomes and hurt relationships.  People are more likely to express what they do not like or want instead of simply expressing what they want because they assume that expressing their emotions will cause conflict. Suppressing these feelings can cause an individual to feel defeated and demeaned, lowering morale and leading to mistrust. As a result, all parties involved cannot work together as a team with the cooperation necessary to accomplish the task at hand.

Imagine a world of connection, clarity, understanding, reflection, unity, and peace. We can help achieve this vision through quality conversation. Relationships will feel more connected by implementing strategies and expressing conversation instead of conflict.  A well-functioning organization requires effective communication from its leaders, which is essential to acknowledge the other party’s perspective and phrase arguments in favorable terms. Considering a broader range of ideas can result in better, more robust ideas. If more people were willing to work together and communicate effectively, we would be living in a world of fewer conflicts.

Conclusion

What does the World need now?  Right now, the world needs all of us to come together and make changes.  We need to improve our recycling practices to help the environment.  We need to ensure that all individuals have easier access to food, no matter their socioeconomic status.  We need to improve our diversity practices and immigration standards so that everyone is safe and healthy.  We need to find a way to combat Covid 19 to ensure our physical and mental health.  Furthermore finally, we need to learn to use conversation over conflict; words are more vital than actions.  If we all take a stand and take action, we can significantly reduce the growing list of what the world needs now, and we can all just enjoy what the World has to offer.
