Hello, my name is Emma and I wanted to read your presentation because I felt as if I did not know a lot about Autism and I wanted to know more. After reading your presentation I really felt that I got to know a lot from it that I did not know beforehand. One statement that I found that got my attention was that 1 in 54 children have Autism and that was a really interesting fact that I did not know and it definitely expanded my knowledge on the topic. Something else that I did not know was that it was discovered in 1911 and was first thought to be schizophrenia. This was an amazing presentation and I definitely enjoyed reading it.

This was a great presentation and informational. I had no idea that they used shock treatment back in the 70’s in an attempt to treat people. I also found it interesting that we now have more children with behavioral/neurological disabilities then physical. I have heard of desperate parents trying horrific “alternative” treatments in an attempt to cure the child. My hope is that as we learn more about autism parents will choose medically effective therapy programs over some guy on an internet forum claiming to “cure” the child with household cleaners.

Hi Quamari! I really enjoyed reading your presentation. I don’t know a lot about autism, so this was very informative. I knew autism wasn’t exactly uncommon, but I was especially surprised to learn that it affected 1 in 54 kids, and that’s just in the U.S. Even more surprising to learn was that autistic thinking is similar to those who have schizophrenia. I would love to learn and hear more about the study done in the 70s. What exactly is aversive punishment mainstream autism treatment approach? How did it work? What was effective and what wasn’t effective about it?

Your presentation was very educational. It is interesting to me that 1 in every 54 8-year old children were diagnosed with autism in 2016. I have found autism to be a wide range, as my younger sister is on the spectrum, but you would not be able to tell from talking to her. 1 in 54 is a lot of children, so this is very surprising to me. Thank you for the presentation!

Quamari,
Your presentation is especially important in this present age. While light is beginning to shine on certain disorders, the statistic you provided on the commonality of autism in children is shocking. With such a prevalent disorder it is very important for people to educated on the topic and know how to deal with an incoming society of young people who may struggle with the disorder. The history you provided about the disorder was also quite fascinating. While I am familiar with autism and special needs, it was very intriguing to learn about where specifically autism started from and came about. Again thank you for sharing on such an important topic!
Best,
