This was for a class project in ENGL 208 Children’s Literature, we were asked to select a poem for children or young adults and to “illustrate” it on the page to appeal to you readers
Crows
Marilyn Nelson
What if to taste and see, to notice things,
to stand each is up against emptiness
for a moment or an eternity—
images collected in consciousness
like a tree alone on the horizon—
is the main reason we’re on the planet.
The food’s here of the first crow to arrive,
numbers two and three at a safe distance,
then approaching the hand-created taste
of leftover coconut macaroons.
The instant sparks in the earth’s awareness.

It’s hard to describe, but the font you used for the word safe actually makes me feel safe. It’s a comforting font. Great job!

As a mother with two toddlers, the font and text would amaze them. You did a great job really making each font truly SHOW what the word makes you feel or see. The entire poem flowed so nicely even with the varying font. A few favorites I really thought were clever- “crow” being above the rest of the text, and “alone” being spaced away so far from the word surrounding. Great job I think you improved the poem immensely!
